What’s in a name? Well in the case of Cali’s Blackanese, a partial genealogical overview and insight into the rapper’s unique background. Originally from Virginia, the West Coast transplant recently dropped two projects this month, each delivering a compact slice of lo-fi weed rap whose titles – Cloud Music and Dreams and Nightmares – clearly affirm Blackanese’s dedication to hazy, headphone jams.
Proof positive that maybe Californian’s braggy declarations of their own greatness has some merit, Blackanese moved to the Golden State and seems so taken by it that he pays it as much lyrical tribut as he does his drugs of choice. Considering the bulk of his material is explicitly dedicated to weed, mushrooms, and Molly, that says a lot to Cali’s ability to completely turn out its residents. Californians who stay in Cali, rather than escape for the northeast, frequently tell people that once they get there, they’ll never want to leave. Blackanese’s recent output serves as almost a sort of travelogue or unintentional passive diary of the transformative effect of the state’s relatively relaxed drug laws, sunny weather, and ethnically ethnic culture on the average person. Taken this way, you could forgive him for sometimes seeming like he has a one-track mind, but with enough listens (and a medicinal connect) you’ll be speaking his language.
