For the past 50 weeks, Battle Video Archives poster and Don’t Flop battler Suus has been compiling a list of the week’s most buzzed-about rap battles and taking a community poll to figure out which battle RapMusic thought was worth trying to pass off what little you remember from your freshman economics course as credentials to tell battle leagues how to run themselves. The four winners of each month are pitted against each other for battle of the month and those twelve winners will go at it to determined which rap battle was truly miles above its peers in terms of quality, memorability, and popularity. For the week of December 2nd, posters declared that they prefer their coffee with heavy cream and selected King of the Dot’s Arcane vs Chedda Cheese as the freshly scrubbed Starbucks bathroom of battle rap.
Now imagine this: a large black obelisk with an observation deck, inscribed with all the bars from Smack/URL’s B-Magic vs Chilla Jones. It’s not hurting anyone, but in the daytime it leaves a looming shadow before it, almost taunting the people on the ground. Split on whether to destroy the monument or attempt to surmount it and occupy it’s upper deck, the people attempt, in vain, best a structure that they find as beguiling as they do awe-inspiring.
Or at least that’s one way to describe the 32-point lead that B-Magic vs Chilla Jones is sporting this week. In a distant second to the much-anticipated URL #barfest is Don’t Flop’s Bamalam vs 100 Bulletz. It’s own prime display of traditional “lyricism”, the “4th Birthday” clash is followed in third place by KOTD’s Fingaz vs Pigsty while KOTD’s Diaz vs A-Class and Grindtime’s Heir Jordan vs Magz are tied for fourth. Do this past week’s runner-ups have any chance for a come-from-behind upset over one of the best battles released this year? That’s up to you.
