NBC apologizes for M.I.A.’s publicity stunt

It’s tough for a hip-hop act to be taken seriously by the mainstream media, and during yesterday’s Super Bowl halftime show, the genre had another setback.

Madonna’s performance during the show included “Give Me all Your Luvin,” which features hip-hop acts Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. During the performance, M.I.A. delivered an uncensored verse and also made the decision to “flip the bird” to the camera (see video below). NBC, who broadcasted the event, released the following statement in response: “We apologize for the inappropriate gesture that aired during halftime,” said a spokesperson. “It was a spontaneous gesture that our delay system caught late.”

The Super Bowl halftime show is somewhat notorious for having boring performances from music’s favorite has-beens. This small opportunity for hip-hop to shine through, during what is considered the most watched live sporting event, was in my opinion completely ruined by her actions.
