Tired of sitting on the shelf, Frank Ocean released his mixtape Nostalgia, Ultra for free on the internet in February 2011. This gutsy move has paid off as the mixtape, with little to no advertising, soared to the top of every critic’s “mixtape of the year” lists. His first single “Novacane” topped the Billboard R&B charts at #17.
2011 was an extraordinary year for Ocean, as he was featured on Tyler The Creator’s Goblin as well as Kanye West and Jay-Z’s collaborative album Watch The Throne. According to a recent interview he did with BBC, Ocean states that his relationship with Def Jam has since improved and they are now working on releasing his official debut album this spring.
